Reduced‐risk insecticides in Neotropical stingless bee species: impact on survival and activity 下载免费PDF全文

As honeybees are the main pollinator subject to an intense research regarding effects of pesticides, other ecologically important native bee pollinators have received little attention in ecotoxicology and risk assessment of pesticides in general, and insecticides in particular, some of which are perceived as reduced‐risk compounds. Here, the impact of three reduced‐risk insecticides – azadirachtin, spinosad and chlorantraniliprole – was assessed in two species of stingless bees, Partamona helleri and Scaptotrigona xanthotrica, which are important native pollinators in Neotropical America. The neonicotinoid imidacloprid was used as a positive control. Spinosad exhibited high oral and contact toxicities in adult workers of both species at the recommended label rates, with median survival times (LT50s) ranging from 1 to 4 h, whereas these estimates were below 15 min for imidacloprid. Azadirachtin and chlorantraniliprole exhibited low toxicity at the recommended label rates, with negligible mortality that did not allow LT50 estimation. Sublethal behavioural assessments of these two insecticides indicated that neither one of them affected the overall group activity of workers of the two species. However, both azadirachtin and chlorantraniliprole impaired individual flight take‐off of P. helleri and S. xanthotrica worker bees, which may compromise foraging activity, potentially leading to reduced colony survival. These findings challenge the common perception of non‐target safety of reduced‐risk insecticides and bioinsecticides, particularly regarding native pollinator species. 相似文献

The honey bee is a major insect used for pollination of many commercial crops worldwide. Although the use of honey bees for pollination can disrupt the habitat, the effects on their physiology have never been determined. Recently, honey bee colonies have often collapsed when introduced in greenhouses for pollination in Japan. Thus, suppressing colony collapses and maintaining the number of worker bees in the colonies is essential for successful long-term pollination in greenhouses and recycling of honey bee colonies. To understand the physiological states of honey bees used for long-term pollination in greenhouses, we characterized their gene expression profiles by microarray. We found that the greenhouse environment changes the gene expression profiles and induces immune-suppression and oxidative stress in honey bees. In fact, the increase of the number of Nosema microsporidia and protein carbonyl content was observed in honey bees during pollination in greenhouses. Thus, honey bee colonies are likely to collapse during pollination in greenhouses when heavily infested with pathogens. Degradation of honey bee habitat by changing the outside environment of the colony, during pollination services for example, imposes negative impacts on honey bees. Thus, worldwide use of honey bees for crop pollination in general could be one of reasons for the decline of managed honey bee colonies. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Foragers of social insects can be guided to profitable food sources by social information transfer within the nest. This study showed that in addition to such an information-centre strategy, social information in the field also plays an important role in individual foraging decisions. The effect of the presence of a nestmate on individual decision-making on where to forage was investigated in six species of stingless bee that differ in their recruitment system. Some species preferred to feed close to a nestmate (local enhancement) whereas other species actively avoided landing close to a nestmate. The term local inhibition is introduced for this avoidance behaviour.

3. Local enhancement and local inhibition were affected by the individual's experience with the food source. Newly recruited foragers of Trigona amalthea showed local enhancement whereas experienced foragers showed local inhibition.

Chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV) causes a disease characterized by trembling, flightless, and crawling bees, while Acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV) is commonly detected in apparently healthy colonies, usually associated to Varroa destructor. Both viruses had been detected in most regions of the world, except in South America. In this work, we detected CBPV and ABPV in samples of Uruguayan honeybees by RT-PCR. The detection of both viruses in different provinces and the fact that most of the analyzed samples were infected, suggest that, they are widely spread in the region. Bumblebees are commercially reared and transported worldwide mainly for pollination of greenhouse tomatoes. Three honeybee viruses have been reported in bumblebees: Acute bee paralysis virus, Kashmir bee virus and Deformed wing virus. We developed a multiplex RT-PCR with primers designed on highly conserved regions of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase in order to detect a maximum range of viral variants. We examined the effect of larval and adult nutrition on worker honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) ovary development. Workers were fed high or low-pollen diets as larvae, and high or low-protein diets as adults. Workers
fed low-protein diets at both life stages had the lowest levels of ovary development, followed by those fed high-protein diets
as larvae and low- quality diets as adults, and then those fed diets poor in protein as larvae but high as adults. Workers
fed high-protein diets at both life stages had the highest levels of ovary development. The increases in ovary development
due to improved dietary protein in the larval and adult life stages were additive. Adult diet also had an effect on body mass.
The results demonstrate that both carry-over of larval reserves and nutrients acquired in the adult life stage are important
to ovary development in worker honey bees. Carry-over from larval development, however, appears to be less important to adult
fecundity than is adult nutrition. Seasonal trends in worker ovary development and mass were examined throughout the brood

Caste fate conflict is expected in Melipona bees because queens and workers are the same size and are reared in identical sealed cells. Extrinsic and intrinsic colonial
factors, however, seem to have limiting effects on queen production. The consequences of colonial conditions on both queen
and worker production, particularly the effects of food storage in the colonies, are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated
whether caste production in seven natural colonies of Melipona compressipes fasciculata was affected by food resources, seasonal factors, or internal factors. The results showed that, at the populational level,
about 5% of the females developed into gynes; in the strongest colony, 12.7% of the females developed into gynes. Male production
was verified only in stronger colonies. We suggest that caste ratio is primarily affected by intra-colonial conditions rather
than by food resources.

Novice foragers of social bees have to decide what food commodity to collect when they start foraging for the first time.
In this decision making process two types of factors are involved: internal factors (the response threshold) and external
factors (environmental and colony conditions). In this study we will focus on the importance of two external factors, pollen
storage level and information from experienced foragers about food availability in the field, on the initial commodity choice of foragers of the stingless bee species Plebeia tobagoensis. We also studied the effect of the initial choice of individuals on their subsequent foraging career. This study was performed
in a closed greenhouse compartment, where food availability and colony condition could be controlled.
Information on food availability in the field from experienced foragers and pollen storage level both greatly influenced the
initial commodity choice of individuals, with more choices for the commodity communicated by experienced foragers or lacking
in storage. The initial choice of foragers is of importance for their future foraging career, although a substantial proportion
of foragers did switch between food commodities. Because of the ability of novice foragers to become flexibly distributed
over foraging tasks, social bees are able to react to changes in their environment without directly having to decrease foraging
effort devoted to other foraging tasks. This, in combination with individual flexibility during foraging careers makes it
possible for colonies of P. tobagoensis to forage efficiently in an ever-changing environment.

Improved methods for preservation of honey bee, Apis mellifera L., germplasm would be very welcome to beekeeping industry queen breeders. The introduction of two parasites and the emergence of an antibiotic resistant disease have increased demands for resistant stock. Techniques for artificial insemination of queens are available, and semen has been cryopreserved with limited success. However, cryopreservation of embryos for rearing queens would mesh well with current practices and also provide drones (haploid males). Eggs at five ages between twenty-four hours and sixty-two hours were exposed to 0, -6.6, and/or -15 degrees C for various times, and successful hatch measured. Honey bee embryos show chill sensitivity as do other insect embryos, and the rate of chill injury increases dramatically with decrease in holding temperature. The 48 h embryos in both groups showed the greatest tolerance to chilling, although 44 h embryos were only slightly less so. 相似文献
